Job Title: Senior Journalist, BBC Disinformation Unit, | Job Location: Abuja

Challenging disinformation is a strategic objective for World Service and it is now setting up a new Disinformation Unit to tackle fake news. Producing high-impact and original journalism, the unit will work closely with our West Africa language services, based in Lagos, to provide our global audiences with reliable news to spot disinformation and keep themselves immune from fake news.Main Responsibilities

  • Overseeing systematic tracking of spread of disinformation across Africa’s digital platforms
  • Identifying trends in spread of disinformation content using analytic tools and traditional journalism techniques.
  • Producing and commissioning human interest stories that show the impact of disinformation and conspiracy theories on people’s lives
  • Producing, commissioning and editing disinformation content optimized for websites and social media platforms
  • Monitoring closed or anonymous groups on social media that could be source of disinformation
  • Identification and production of accurate, fast-reaction reports to debunk viral misinformation that matters to language services and their audiences
  • Planning for coverage of big news events which might give rise to fake news
  • Liaising with social teams in BBC Africa and BBC News to amplify the reach and impact of our original content
  • Going on air, if necessary, to share editorial insights with our audiences
  • Working closely with editorial teams to improve collaboration in content production and sharing resources
  • Explaining complex data stories data through graphics, charts and other visual journalism tools.
  • Using audience participation tools and collaborating with Marketing and Audiences, SEO and UGC teams, etc. to be aware of our audiences’ needs and interests and engage with them
  • Deputizing the Disinformation Editor and signing-off content whenever necessary

Are you the right candidate?

  • Proven experience of leading an editorial team in a dispersed operation and of making sound judgements on sensitive editorial issues.
  • A successful record in digital news production with demonstrable experience of writing text and producing video content to the highest editorial standards. The successful candidate will be proficient in FCP and/or QEdit to a high professional standard, with a good working knowledge of CPS beneficial.
  • A clear understanding of the needs and profile of our target audiences across World Service and the ability to translate these into imaginative and compelling multi-platform content.
  • Demonstrable experience of producing impactful content for social media. Experience of reaching new audiences on social and knowledge of social media best practice, key opportunities and of BBC/WS social strategy.
  • Excellent Hausa and English writing and sub-editing skills and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Fluency in one of our other West African languages (Igbo, Pidgin, Yoruba) is advantageous.
  • A clear understanding of BBC’s editorial policy as well as procedures around investigations, and experience of dealing with legally tricky stories.

Main Responsibilities

  • To investigate, track and monitor disinformation campaigns across the African media landscape that inform and educate our audiences
  • To produce digital videos, write copy and create content for different platforms
  • To use social listening tools to identify trends and find story ideas
  • To find interesting contributors and interviewees
  • To create digital assets including graphics, charts, maps, memes, etc to explain difficult topics

Are you the right candidate?

  • A successful record in digital news production with demonstrable experience of both writing text and producing video content to the highest editorial standards.

  • Significant experience in investigative journalism.
  • A clear understanding of the needs and profile of our target audiences across World Service and the ability to translate these into imaginative and compelling multi-platform content.
  • A self-starting individual – you will be able to come up with ideas, get them commissioned made and delivered efficiently and picked up by teams and platforms across BBC news.
  • The ability to plan and organize time and resources effectively and to manage projects to conclusion according to deadlines.
  • A good knowledge of English and Pidgin including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
  • Fluency in one of our other West African languages (Hausa, Igbo, Yoruba) is advantageous.
  • Strong working knowledge of the data and analytics tools available and demonstrable evidence of using them effectively.

Role Introduction

The BBC World Service remains the leading international broadcaster in Africa, reaching millions of audiences across all platforms and Social Media. As part of the world’s largest broadcaster, the BBC Africa Service broadcasts a daily mix of news and current affairs programmes through radio, TV and digital platforms to very large and audiences in West Africa and beyond.

We have an opportunity for a Senior Camera Operator to join our team in Lagos.

Main Responsibilities

  • Operate cameras without supervision to a medium level of artistic complexity.
  • Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, shoot, assemble, edit and deliver outputs in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards – recognising the distinct requirements of different types of output.
  • Routinely shoots and edits packages, long form pieces.
  • Operate lighting for camera to a basic level of complexity (normally restricted to basic lighting kit).
  • Operate and rig the full range of camera equipment for high complexity productions (multi-camera).
  • To undertake pre- and post-production and studio work, live and pre-recorded. Use a range of video, audio and digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.
  • To liaise closely with other team members and with other departments in the BBC, to ensure that output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is upheld.
  • Work to the highest level of craft complexity on directed multi-camera productions including handheld.
  • Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • Willing and adept at passing on skills through training and mentoring.
  • At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.

Are you the right candidate?

  • Experience as a camera operator and editor.
  • Relevant experience in a News broadcasting environment, practicing a range of location craft skills (e.g. camerawork / lighting / editing / location facilities). Able to demonstrate a strong interest in and proven commitment to News.
  • Proven knowledge of issues and stories relevant to African audiences.
  • Experience of filming, editing and packaging content for TV and radio.
  • Ability to gather and prepare audio and video material for use on any service, recognising the distinct requirements of different types of output, self-shooting and editing routinely.
  • Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques – especially self-shooting and editing.
  • Industry recognised training.
  • Experience in working across a range of programmes genres, both recorded and live.
  • Excellent communication skills, tact and diplomacy and be able to liaise with people at all levels.
  • Must have the full range of location craft and technical skills, the ability to operate current broadcast technical equipment on location and at base, demonstrating a well-developed sense of visual awareness and a willingness to learn how to use new technology and kit.
  • Excellent digital skills with track record of researching and discovering stories and after appropriate training use PNG, Quickfire and other newsgathering systems.
  • Demonstrate excellent knowledge of digital broadcast – Using WMT (Mobile), Lucy live, livestreaming, DSNG etc
